... she's wide-eyed and innocent, but keeps a sharp little switch-blade hidden in her pink faux-leather purse to prick pomposity and pretentiousness. Mostly though she just wants to have a good time. Please note, if you message me and I do not answer it always means I am not at my computer. Even if Stumble shows me as being online (which it sometimes does incorrectly) I may be either wandering aimlessly or hiding in the cupboard to escape my aunt or performing some menial task for the cat ..:)).. ellie .. (P.s. - I don't really 'stumble' in the conventional way. Each page is a different 'theme' so whatever is on the first page isn't what the blog is 'about'.

We're ... Stumbling Aimlessly ... again

I pulled these posts back up to the front-page again for today because there might just be a couple of thoughts and links that are useful if you haven't been using SU long (or even if you have)....:)) Just a quick 'health-warning' though. I am no expert on SU (or anything else for that matter) so don't take anything I say as gospel. Someone elses experience may well differ from mine. Oh and incidentally, one of the best collections of good advice and useful links I've come across is here at the site of the ever-interesting and helpful Xineann.

Are You Too Sensitive ?

I've read a few posts and articles recently that all seem to suggest the internet in general, and social-networking sites in particular, are no places for the sensitive amongst us. You should expect to be offended and if you can't take the heat, well just get out of the kitchen. Toughen up or ship out, dude ! Those kind of sentiments.

I can certainly agree that no-one has an absolute right never to be offended. If you belong to some wacky religion or political party and free discussion about general issues or ideas on a blog offends you then that *is* just tough. Free speech wins. You need to move on elsewhere and not obsess over whatever it is you didn't like. There are literally millions of other sites to see.

Where I disagree strongly with the 'if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen' philosophy though is when offense is intentional and personal. If someone abuses the SU review system by leaving you a sarcastic or personally unpleasant review, if someone is abusive when they message you, if some juvenile idiot decides to wage a cyber vendetta against you then no, that is *not* alright. It is *never* alright. It is *not* a free speech issue whatever anyone might claim. The lame argument that "I'm just speaking my mind" doesn't wash at all. The internet does not provide some magical dispensation for people to behave like offensive assholes. Exactly the same rules of politeness and consideration apply here as in our 'real' everyday lives and to suggest that in some way its your own 'fault' for being too 'sensitive' when you're offended by someone elses rudeness is both insulting to you and shows a strange, twisted logic that actually enables the bad guys.

As far as I'm concerned, bad manners and rudeness are totally unacceptable wherever they occur. You have every right to be offended if people are rude, sarcastic or unpleasant to you on SU (or anywhere else online) and its they, not you, who need to get the hell out of Dodge if they can't behave decently !
